India’s top-ranked women singles player Ankita Raina entered the final round of the Australian Open qualifiers with a win over higher-ranked Katarina Zavatska on Wednesday.
However, it was disappointment for India in men’s singles as Ramkumar Ramanathan and Prajnesh Gunneswaran crashed out in the second round.
World Nom 180 Raina defeated the World No. 118 Ukrainian 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 in the second round of women’s singles qualifiers.
The 28-year-old India will face 19-year-old Olga Danilovic from Serbia in the final round of the qualifiers. The Serbian is yet to drop a set in the qualifiers.
In the men’s singles competition, World No 188 Ramkumar Ramanathan lost to Chinese Taipei’s Tung-Lin Wu (World No 247) 3-6, 2-6 while World No 128 Prajnesh Gunneswaran was defeated by World No 227 France’s Constant Lestienne 2-6, 3-6.
