Common we Games gold medalist Vikas Krishan defeated 2nd seed Ablaikhan Zhussupov of Kazakhstan, the bronze medalist of last two World Championships in 2017 & 2019. Vikas won by split 3-2 verdict. He will face Zeyad Ishaish of host nation in the final.
Simranjeet Kaur got better off third seed Shih-Yi Wu of Taiwan by split 3-2 verdict in a come from behind win after trailing in the opening round. She will take on Korea’s Oh Yeonji in the final.
Other good result for Indian contingent on Tuesday came from Sachin Kumar (81kg) who kept his Olympic dream alive by defeating Manh Cuong Nguyen of Vietnam 4-1 in the first box-off. He will have to beat Shabbos Negmatulloev of Tajikistan in the last box-off on Wednesday to book a ticket to Tokyo.
However, it was a disappointing for the other Indian boxers. Six-time world champion Mary Kom lost to China’s Chang Yuan, a former Youth Olympics champion, in a split 1-4 verdict. Also making semifinal exit was World Championship silver-medallist and top seed Panghal, who lost to Jianguan Hu of China in a split 3-2 decision.
Two-time world Championship bronze-medallist and second seed Lovlina Borgohain, Ashish Kumar (75kg), Satish Kumar (+91kg), Pooja Rani (75kg) were other four losing semifinalists. All of these 8 semifinalist have qualified for the Tokyo Games at the ongoing event so far. Sachin Kumar & Manish Kaushik (63kg) will fight for a place in Tokyo Olympics in their box off bouts on Wednesday.
