Asian TT Championships: 3 Indian doubles pairs enter quarter-finals

3 Indian doubles pairs confirmed their quarter-finals spot at the 2021 ITTF-ATTU Asian Championships currently underway Lusail Sports Arena, Doha.

Achanta Sarath Kamal and Sathiyan Gnanasekaran qualified for the quarter-finals in men’s doubles after beating Kazakh duo Kirill Gerassimenko and Alan Kurmangaliyev in a nail-biting match. Earlier in the day, the veteran Indian duo defeated Ahmed Alawlaqi and Fahed Almughanne of Qatar 3-0 (11-5, 11-5, 11-2) to reach the round of 16 stage. L In the round of 16, they defeated their Kazakh opponents 3-2 (11-9, 11-6, 9-11, 8-11, 11-7) and booked their place in the quarters. They will face Chew Zhe Yu Clarence and Beh Kun Ting of Singapore tomorrow.

The other men’s doubles pair from India, Harmeet Desai and Manav Thakkar also secured their place in the top 8. The Indian pair defeated Saudi Arabia’s Naif Al-Jadai and Al- Abbad Abdulaziz 3-0 (11-4, 11-9, 11-9) in their round of 16 tie. Earlier in the competition, they ousted the Indonesian pair of Rafanael Nikola Niman and Fikri Faqih Fadalah 3-0 (11-4, 11-4, 11-7). Harmeet and Manav will face Iranian pair Noshad Almiyan and Nima Almiyan in the quarters tomorrow.

Sutirtha Mukherjee and Ayhika Mukherjee stormed into the quarter-finals after defeating Chen Szu-Yu and Li Yu-Jhun in the round of 16. Sutirtha and Ayhika earlier took down Anastassiya Lavrova and Anel Bakhyt of Kazakhstan 3-0 (11-2, 11-6, 11-7) in their round of 32 match. The Indian pair then registered a 3-1 (11-9, 12-10, 8-11, 11-9) victory over pair from Chinese Taipei and stepped into the last eight. They will face Miyu Nagasaki and Minami Ando of Japan tomorrow.

Archana Girish Kamath and Sreeja Akula suffered defeat in their round of 16 tie of women’s doubles. The Indian duo qualified for the round of 16 after defeating Bangladeshi pair Sonam Sultana and Sadia Rahman Mou 3-0 ( 11-5,11-3, 11-6). But unfortunately, their journey was cut short by Doo Hoi Kem and Lee Ho Ching of Hong Kong. The Indian Pair went down 1-3 (10-12, 7-11, 12-10, 13-15). With their exit from the competition, the pair of Sutirtha and Ayhika remains India’s only hope in Women’s Doubles.

In the men’s singles round of 128 matches, Harmeet Desai started with a 3-0 (11-7, 11-6, 11-5) over Ahmed Alawlqi of Qatar, Manav defeated Fahed Almughanne of Qatar 3-0 (13-11, 11-4, 11-5) while Sanil Shetty registered a 3-1 (11-6, 5-11, 11-6, 11-6) win over Jaber Al Balhan of Kuwait.
