Barramundis announce T20 World Cup squad
PNG men’s cricket team, also known as the Barramundis, have announced their T20 World cup squad.
While Barramundis are currently at the bottom of the CWC League 2 with no wins from their 8 ODIs till now, they did gave a good performance at the T20 World Cup qualifiers in 2019 where they finished 2nd and even beat the Netherlands in the group stage before losing to them in the final. With that result, Barramundis qualified for the T20 World Cup.
Barramundis are placed in Group B in the qualifying round with Bangladesh, Oman and Scotland and given their recent form where they have lost all 4 recent ODIs against the USA and Nepal, it will be a tough ask for them to get close to qualifying for Super 12. Barramundis will be looking to give competitive performances in the Qualifying round.
One of the key players in the Barramundis squad is pace bowling all-rounder Norman Vanua who has consistently given good performances with the ball and also made useful contributions with the bat as well under crunch situations. Norman Vanua has taken 36 wickets in 25 ODIs at an average of 26 and 35 wickets in 25 T20Is at an average of 14 and an economy rate of 6.18. Norman Vanua has struck 321 runs with that bat in T20Is and his strike rate of 152 indicates his big-hitting abilities. Norman Vanua has also scored 296 runs in ODIs at a strike rate of 91.
Another player to watch out for is all-rounder Charles Amini. Amini comes from a cricketing family as his grandfather, father, mother and elder brother have all represented PNG and Barramundis home ground Amini Park is also named after his family. Charles Amini has been a key player for Barramundis from the days of WCL divisional tournaments. Charles Amini has accumulated 377 runs in 23 T20Is at an average of 26.9 and a strike rate of 116 and picked up 19 wickets at an average of 19.3 and an impressive economy of 5.81.
Barramundis captain and all-rounder Assad Vala has been a consistent performer for Barramundis since they got ODI status and Barramundis will be hoping Assad Vala can get going in T20Is as well after having done well in the 50 over format.
Top-order batsman Tony Ura is mostly known for his knock of 151 against Ireland in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers. Ura is an attacking batsman and has a strike rate of 140 in T20Is.
