Joshna Chinappa entered the women’s singles quarterfinals while Saurav Ghoshal went down in men’s singles competition at the CIB Egyptian Open in Cairo on Tuesday.
World No.11 Joshna defeated Egypt’s Farida Mohammed in a five-set thriller 11-7, 11-6, 7-11, 10-12, 11-9 in 59 minutes. She will next face World No.2 Nour El Sherbini of Egypt in her quarterfinal.
However, it was disappointment for Saurav Ghoshal in men’s singles as the World No.13 bowed out of the tournament, losing in straight-sets to Mazen Hesham in the third round 8-11,9-11,8-11 in 56 minutes.
CIB Egyptian is the first competitive outing in six months for both these Indian players. Both were given a bye in the first round and then secured comprehensive victories in their second-round encounters to qualify for round 3.
