Deaflympics 2021: Indian wrestlers win 3 medals, Sumit Dahiya clinches gold

India’s wrestling contingent bagged three medals on the penultimate day of the ongoing Deaflympics currently in Caxias do Sul, Brazil. The three wrestling medals took India’s medal tally to 16 medals in total.

Sumit Dahiya clinched gold after defeating Iran’s Mohammad Rasoul Ghamar Pour in the 97kg freestyle final.

Also making a podium finishes were veteran Virender Singh (74kg freestyle) and Amit Krishan (86kg freestyle), both of them won bronze.

Virender defeated Nicholas Barron of the USA to win his 5th Deaflympics medal. Before this, the 36-year-old had won gold in 2005, 2013 & 2017 while in 2009, he took bronze.

Amit Krishan won against S Gozel of Turkey in the men’s 86kg freestyle bronze medal bout.

India’s tally of 16 medals includes 8 gold, 1 silver and 7 bronze medals. India’s previous best came at Sofia Deaflympics held in 1993 when they bagged seven medals, including five gold and two bronze.
