(RGP Media) Chencho Gyeltshen’s phenomenal brace helped RoundGlass Punjab FC (RGPFC) to get back to winning ways—much to the elation of Head Coach Curtis Fleming—with an emphatic 2-0 result at the Kalyani Municipal Stadium in West Bengal on Thursday, February 4.
RGPFC’s thoroughly dominating performance saw the Club climb to the third position on the Hero I-League table with eight points. Two moments of brilliance by Chencho handed RGPFC the much-needed win to make a strong comeback into the title race.
RoundGlass Punjab FC got their best opportunity of the first half in the 24th minute when a swirling cross from a distance by Aakash Sangwan almost found Aphaoba Singh in front of the goal. Aphaoba was waiting at the far post but failed to connect. A deft connection could have given RoundGlass Punjab the lead right then.
RGPFC, however, scored the first goal of the game in the 42nd minute. A long-range attempt from outside the box by Suranjit Singh was spilt by TRAU’s custodian Soram Poirei. Lurking inside the box, Chencho smashed the ball at the back of the net to take the lead in the blink of an eye. RoundGlass Punjab FC went to the dressing room with a 1-0 lead at half time.
Playing on the counter, RGPFC had two glorious opportunities to double their lead but Ashish Jha scuffed both chances.
In the 64th minute, a delightful cross from the right flank by Pritam Singh was brought down by Chencho inside the box. The Bhutanese forward showed his magic again as he controlled the ball quickly, scooped it to his right foot, and unleashed a venomous strike that doubled RoundGlass Punjab’s lead, much against the run of play.
TRAU tried to come back into the match to salvage at least a point but rock-solid defending by RGPFC helped Curtis Fleming’s men to secure their fourth clean sheet of the league in six appearances, and this time with a full three points.
