India enters semifinal of Online Chess Olympiad

India has entered the semi-finals of the ongoing FIDE Online Chess Olympiad. The Indian team defeated Ukraine in the quarter-finals on Monday.

The match was decided in the tiebreaker after both teams won one round each. Nihal Sarin won his match to put India 1-0 ahead. Vidit Gujrathi managed a draw to keep India in the lead. Then D Harika gained a victory in her match to increase India’s lead by 2 points. B Adhiban also secured a victory which gave India an unassailable lead. R Vaishali cruised to victory in her match while Koneru Humpy played out a draw as India emerged victorious by 5-1.

Earlier, in the first round, India secured a 4-2 win over their opponents after D Harika and Nihal Sarin won their matches while Vishwanathan Anand, P Harikrishna, Koneru Humpy and R Vaishali share points in their respective matches.

In the second round, India took a 2-0 lead with D Harika and R Praggnanandhaa winning their matches. Vishwanath Anand secured a draw to put India ahead 2.5-0.5. However, Vidit Gujrathi, R Vaishali and Koneru Humpy suffered losses in their respective matches as India lost the round by 2.5-3.5, which forced the match to move into the tie-breaker where India won easily.

India will face the winner of Kazakhstan and the USA in the semifinals on Tuesday. The Indian team comprises Viswanathan Anand, Vidit Gujrathi, Koneru Humpy, D Harika, Nihal Sarin, Tania Sachdev, Bhakti Kulkarni, P. Harikrishna, R Praggnanandhaa, B Adhiban, R Vaishali and Savitha Shri.
