The two North Indian based franchises, Delhi Capitals and King’s XI Punjab will take on each other in the second match of the 13th season of Indian Premier League at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Sunday, 20th September. Both the teams are among the three current franchises to have never won the trophy and instability in their line up is seen as the primary reason for the struggles of both the teams. However, both the teams are looking very formidable for this season with both being loaded with some of the top performers of the last two seasons.
Playing Conditions: The playing conditions in Dubai are quite similar to that of Abu Dhabi. Big scores are rarely achieved on this ground in other leagues like PSL or in the T20 internationals. Spinners rule the roast so the rotation of strike will become very important.
In 2014, 7 IPL matches were played in Dubai where the team batting first won thrice while team batting 2nd won 4 times. The average total batting first on this venue in the 7 matches played in 2014 edition of IPL was 149.
Delhi Capitals: 1. Prithvi Shaw, 2. Shikhar Dhawan, 3. Shimron Hetmeyer, 4. Shreyas Iyer (c), 5. Rishabh Pant (wk), 6. Marcus Stoinis, 7. Keemo Paul, 8. Ravichandran Ashwin, 9. Kagiso Rabada, 10. Amit Mishra, 11. Ishant Sharma.
Kings XI Punjab: 1. KL Rahul (c & wk), 2. Mayank Agarwal, 3. Nicholas Pooran, 4. Glenn Maxwell, 5. Sarfaraz Khan, 6. Mandeep Singh, 7. K Gowtham, 8. Chris Jordan/Sheldon Cottrell, 9. Ravi Bishnoi 10. Mohammed Shami, 11. Mujeeb Ur Rahman.
Rishabh Pant: Rishabh Pant has been one of the most impactful batsmen in the last couple of seasons where he has struck 1172 runs with an average of 45.08 and at a strike rate of 168.67. Delhi Capitals will be wishing that Pant produces similar performance in this season.
Ravichandran Ashwin: The veteran Indian spinner has fallen out of favour from India’s white-ball team for quite some time. But with current Indian white spinners struggling in the last few series, a good IPL for Ashwin might open the doors for him for Indian limited formats side.
KL Rahul: KL Rahul has been super consistent in the last two seasons of the IPL, having scored more runs than any other batsman. The KXIP skipper has smashed 1252 runs at an impressive average of 54.43 and also at a very good strike rate of 146.60. Rahul has also been brilliant for team India in the last few white-ball series and will be looking forward to continue his tremendous run in this season’s IPL.
Mujeeb Ur Rahman: The Afghan spinner had a terrific CPL where he picked up 16 wickets in 11 matches at an average of 13.56 and at the economy of 5.29. On slow wicket of Dubai, Mujeeb will be the go-to bowler for his side.
Coach Speaks :
“We have high hopes from this season, we have a really good squad, a very balanced squad, some experienced and some youngsters. I am getting to know them now and seeing them play for the first time here, some of them in nets, so yeah just looking forward to build on the preparation and to be ready for the IPL,” – Anil Kumble, Kings XI Punjab head coach said on team’s twitter handle.
“We’ve done most of our research, most of our plans with regards to Kings XI Punjab. One thing I’ll say about this IPL is that every squad is a very good squad. We can sit back and talk about how flexible the Delhi Capitals squad is and we can gurantee that every other squad is saying exactly the same.” – Ricky Ponting, head coach of Delhi Capitals
