Chennai Super Kings will take on Delhi Capitals tonight in the Match 7 of 2020 Indian Premier League. Delhi is coming on the back of an emphatic super over victory against Kings XI Punjab while CSK suffered a jolt in their last encounter against Rajasthan Royals, after an opening day victory over Mumbai Indians. Both teams will be looking to register their 2nd wins of the tournament. It would also be a strategic battle between Delhi coach Ricky Ponting and CSK skipper MS Dhoni, two of international cricket’s most successful captains.
Key to win: For CSK their experience and the core strength is the key to win against the young Delhi squad, they have won 16 out of 21 matches against Delhi including a clean sweep in the last season. For Delhi, their batting order has to perform in order to win this game. Spinners and overseas fast bowlers also can play a part in it. As we saw earlier in Dubai, the team can choose to bowl as expected. Patience in the middle and building the partnership is the key for both the team to win the match.
Bowling has been worse for CSK in the last match but Dhoni isn’t any captain who make changes in the team after 1 failure. Since Rayudu and Bravo are unfit to play yet we expect CSK to place same playing XI.
CSK: Shane Watson, Murali Vijay, Faf du Plessis, Ruturaj Gaikwad, MS Dhoni (c & wk), Sam Curran, Kedar Jadhav, Ravindra Jadeja, Piyush Chawla, Deepak Chahar, Lungi Ngidi.
For Delhi, they have already settled with a solid batting order. Ravi Ashwin got injured in the last match, if he is not fit to play then Amit Mishra could replace and also Mohit Sharma may also get replaced by domestic talent Avesh Khan.
DC : Shikhar Dhawan, Prithvi Shaw, Shimron Hetmyer, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant, Marcus Stoinis, Axar Patel, Ravichandran Ashwin/Amit Mishra, Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, Mohit Sharma/Avesh Khan.
Players to watch out for:
MS Dhoni: When it comes to CSK vs Delhi no one has scored more runs than MS Dhoni in this current squad. He has struck 572 runs at the avg of 35.16. Though he is away from cricket for a long time, this is the right time for him to come back at the right time for the team. His hat-trick sixes is evident that he can land his helicopter anytime soon on the field.
Faf du Plessis: He has scored a half-century in both the matches he played so far. The first match showed he can play an anchor role for the team when needed and also an explosive knock in the end. He is a perfect no. 3 for them and certainly a player to watch out for in the match.
Rishabh Pant: Pant’s form has been a key for Delhi Capitals for the past 2 seasons of the IPL. He has scored 1205 runs in 31 matches since 2018 and is only behind KL Rahul. If he performs then Delhi will have an upper hand in this match.
Kagiso Rabada: Rabada has taken 27 wickets in last 13 matches for Delhi including 2 super over winning performances. His death bowling has been effective for the team since last year. If Rabada breaks CSK’s experienced batting line up they can win the match easily. He can break the partnership when needed and can bowl well exceptionally in death. MS Dhoni vs Rabada will be a battle to watch out for in this match.
MS is one of the players that hasn’t played much cricket in the last year-and-a-half. Everyone expects MS to come out and do what he has done in the past. It doesn’t just happen, it takes a bit of work and a part of his process of getting up to speed is his game time and that (match against Rajasthan Royals) was really the first time that he’d batted in the middle apart from a couple of balls against Mumbai Indians.” – CSK head coach Stephen Fleming on Dhoni’s scratchy start.
“It’s going to be a different ball game altogether. Stats might not give the real picture in this IPL. That happened a year and a half ago, this is a different tournament. Some might come in a form much earlier, some might take a bit longer compared to others. We’re a different squad also, we have bought some new players in the auction. So compared to last year, we are a different Delhi Capitals team this year. So how we played last year against CSK has nothing to do with this IPL I guess.” – Kaif on CSK being the only team that they didn’t beat last year.
