2017 World Champion Mirabai Chanu and 2018 Youth Olympic champion Jeremy Lalrinnunga will lead the seven-member Indian squad at the Asian Weightlifting Championships to be held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan from April 16 to 25.
The continental meet is an International Weightlifting Federation Gold Level and will act as an Olympic qualifier.
Mirabai Chanu will compete in Women’s 49kg category while Jeremy Lalrinnunga will take the floor in Men’s 67kg category.
The squad also comprises of Two-time Commonwealth Games gold medalist, Sathish Sivalingam, who will take part in the men’s 81kg category and 2019 Asian Championships Silver medalist, Jhilli Dalabehera, who will fight for medal in Women’s 45kg category.
Olympic qualification process for Weightlifting:
For each weight class, 14 weightlifters qualify. These places are allocated as follows:
8 from the IWF ranking list
5 continental places from that ranking list, with one per continent limited to NOCs without other qualified athletes
1 from either the host (6 weight classes) or Tripartite Commission invitation (8 weight classes)
Mirabai Chanu and Jeremy Lalrinnunga are almost assured of Tokyo Olympics qualification.
Mirabai Chanu is ranked fourth in Women’s 49kg category while Jeremy Lalrinnunga is the highest-ranked Asian outside of top eight.
