Olympian Sandeep Kumar created a new national record in the 10km Race-Walk at the Gran Premio Internacional Madrid Marcha LaLiga on Monday.
Sandeep clocked 39:44 to finish 8th in the men’s 10km Race-Walk event to break the previous record of 40:18 which was held by Gurmeet Singh. The 36-year-old also holds the national record in the men’s 20km Race-Walk event. Compatriot 18-year-old Amit Khatri, who had bagged U20 World Championships silver last year, finished 20th with a time of 40:53.
In the women’s 10km Race-Walk event, Olympian Bhawna Jat finished 9th clocking 45:20. National record holder Priyanka was 10th with a time of 45:47 while Ravina ended up at the 26th spot with a timing of 51:56.
Sweden’s Perseus Karlstrom won the men’s competition with timing of 38:42 edging out Spain’s Diego García (38:49). Brazil’s Caio Bonfim (39:13) took bronze. On the women’s side, China’s Qieyang Shenjie won easily with the timing of 43:07, Peru’s Kimberly García (43:37) and Spain’s Laura García-Caro (43:50) finished 2nd and 3rd respectively.
