Royal Challengers Bangalore allrounder, Washington Sundar has been sidelined for the second half of the Indian Premier League 2021 after suffering a finger injury. The franchise has roped Bengal medium-pacer Akash Deep, as his replacement.
Before the start of the ongoing 5 match test series against England, Washington suffered an injury on his right hand when a sharp lifter from Siraj hit him during a practice game between County Select XI and the Indians. X-Ray results later confirmed a fracture. Earlier this year, Sundar grabbed three wickets in six matches with an average of 32.11 in the first half of IPL 2021. Since joining RCB in 2018, the off-spinning allrounder has picked up 19 wickets in 32 matches for the Bengaluru based franchise.
Akash Deep, who was serving the franchise earlier in the season will take Washi’s spot. 24-year-old medium-pacer took 7 wickets in five matches for Bengal in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2021 and was their second-highest wicket-taker in the tournament. Deep has taken 21 wickets at an average of 16.85 and an economy rate of 6.67 in 15 T20s. He has been a regular for his state side across the formats and was instrumental in Bengal’s last Ranji Trophy campaign in 2019-20 where they finished Runners up.
In a statement, the RCB management concluded, “The move reiterates the focus RCB has on grooming and nurturing young players as the team continues to develop exceptional talents and create a pathway for young talents to find their way into IPL and Indian Cricket.”
