Tokyo Olympics: Mary Kom, Manika win; Sathiyan, Sania-Ankita bow out

MC Mary Kom kicked off her campaign with a win at the Kokugikan arena. on Sunday. London Olympics bronze medalist Mary Kom defeated Miguelina Hernandez Garcia of Dominican Republic 4-1 to march into the round of 16.

In table tennis, it was a mixed day for the Indian contingent. Manika Batra upset 20th seeded Margryta Pestoska of Ukraine 4-11, 4-11, 11-7, 12-10, 8-11, 11-5, 11-7 and moved to the third round.

In a very close seven-setter, Manika came twice from behind to become the first Indian paddler with consecutive wins at the Olympics. Ukrainian Margryta started the match well and took the first two sets comfortably and was looking to run away with the match.

Manika came roaring back and took the next two sets to make it 2-2. Margarita made it hard for Manika when she once again took the lead in the match after winning the 5th set. But Manika came well in the clutch and took the last two sets to move into the 3rd round of Women’s Table Tennis Singles. In the 3rd round, Manika will take on World no.14 and 10th seed Sofia Polcanova of Austria.

Just before Manika’s victory, another Indian paddler Sathiyan Gnanasekaran bowed out from the second round of the men’s singles. In a very shocking loss, Sathiyan lost seven-setter 11-7, 7-11, 4-11, 5-11, 11-9, 12-10, 11-6 against World No. 97 Lam Siu Hang. After losing the first set, Sathiyan took the next 3 sets convincingly and looked set to reach the next round. Lam made a brilliant comeback and won the next two sets to force the game into the 7th set where he gave no chance to Sathiyan and ran away with the victory. With Sathiyan’s loss, India’s only hope in men’s singles is now Sarath Kamal Achanta. Sarath will take on Portuguese paddler Tiago Apolonia tomorrow.

Meanwhile, in Tennis, India’s women’s doubles pair of Sania Mirza and Ankita Raina suffered a gruelling loss 6-0, 6-7, 8-10 at the hands of Ukraine’s KIchenok twins and crashed out from the 1st round.

Indian pair started well and ruthlessly took the first set. Sania and Ankita started the second set well and took a 5-3 lead. At that moment it looked like the Indian Pair will cruise into the second round but Ukrainian twins had other plans. From the jaws of defeat, they came roaring back and took the second set 7-6 to force the third set. In the third set, the Indian pair couldn’t hold onto their nerves and crashed out from the first round. With Ankita and Sania’s loss in women’s doubles, Sumit Nagal remains India’s only hope in Tennis. He will take on World No. 2 Daniil Medvedev to book his place into the next round.
