Tokyo Olympics: Mixed day for Indian shuttlers and paddlers; Satwik-Chirag produce a major upset

It was a mixed day for the Indian shuttlers and paddlers on the opening day of the Tokyo Olympics 2020.

The World No.10 pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty produced a major upset as they beat the World No.3 pair of Lee Yang and Wang Chi-Lin of Chinese Taipei. The India duo won a three-set thriller 21-16, 16-21, 27-25.

B Sai Praneeth suffered a shock defeat against Misha Zilberman of Israel. 13th seed Sai Praneeth was defeated by World No.47 Zilberman 17-21, 15-21 in 41 minutes in his opening Group ‘D’ encounter.

Manika Batra outclassed Tin-Tin Ho of Great Britain by 11-7, 11-6, 12-10, 11-9 in just 27 minutes.

Sutirtha Mukherjee made a brilliant comeback to win a seven-seat thriller against Linda Bergstrom 5-11, 11-9, 11-13, 9-11, 11-3, 11-9, 11-5.

Earlier in the day, the mixed doubles pair of Achanta Sarath Kamal and Manika Batra crashed out from the round of 16 as they were defeated by the 3rd seeded Chinese Taipei pair of Lin Yun JU and Cheng I Ching in straight sets 8-11, 6-11, 5-11, 4-11.
