Tokyo Olympics: Pooja Rani one win away from medal; mixed day for the archers

Tokyo Olympics: Boxer Pooja Rani entered the quarterfinals of the Women’s Middleweight (69-75) category at Kokugikan Arena on Tuesday.

Pooja Rani outclassed Ichrak Chaib of Algeria 5-0 in her round of 16 encounters.  She will face the Rio Olympics bronze medalist and 2018 World Champion Li Qian of China in the quarterfinals.

In Archery, it was a mixed day for the Indian contingent. Deepika Kumari made it to the third round while Pravin Jadhav was eliminated in the second round.

Deepika, who finished 9th in the ranking round, defeated Karma of Bhutan 6-0 (26-23, 26-23, 27-24) in the first round. In the second round, the 27-year-old had a close contest with 24th seed Jennifer Mucino-Fernandez of the USA where the Indian won 6-4 (25-26, 28-27, 27-25, 24-25, 26-25) and moved to the round of 16. Deepika will play her pre-quarterfinal on Friday.

Earlier, Pravin Jadhav was knocked out in the second round after losing 0-6 (27-28, 26-27, 23-26) to 3 times Olympic medalist  Brady Ellison. Pravin had earlier defeated Galsan Bazarzhapov of the Russian Olympic Committee by 6-0 (29-27, 28-27, 27-24) in the first round.

In Badminton, 13th seed B Sai Praneeth lost 14-21, 14-21 to Mark Caljouw of the Netherlands in Group D. This was the second consecutive defeat for the 13th seed in the group stage, whose campaign was already over before the match.
