Tokyo Olympics: PV Sindhu enters knockout stage; Tarundeep Rai eliminated

Tokyo Olympics: Rio Olympics silver medalist entered the knockout stage of the women’s singles after securing her second straight win at the Musashino Forest Sports Plaza on Wednesday.

Sixth-seeded Sindhu defeated Ngyan Yi Cheung 21-9, 21-16 in just 36 minutes. Sindhu will take on 11th seed Mia Blichfeldt of Denmark in the round of 16.

Veteran Archer Tarundeep Rai crashed out after losing in the round of 32. 37th seed Tarundeep defeated 28th seed Oleksii Hunbin of Ukraine 6-4 (25-25, 27-28, 27-27, 26-24, 28-25) in the round of 64 but in the round of 32, he was ousted by 60th seed Itay Shanny of Israel. The 5-sets ended at the level and the match was decided in a one-off shot where the Tarundeep managed a 9 while Shanny hit a 10 to secure a spot in the next round.

Meanwhile, in rowing,  Arjun Jat and Arvind Singh were eliminated in the semifinals of men’s lightweight doubles sculls. The Indian duo finished 6th with a timing of 6:24.41.

Arjun and Arvind were the first Indians to reach to compete in a double sculls semifinals at the Olympics.
