Veteran Achanta Sharath Kamal emerged as the only Indian survivor among the paddler at the Tokyo Olympics on Monday.
The 39-year-old Indian defeated Portugal’s Tiago Polonia in six sets 2-11 11-8 11-5 9-11 11-6 11-9 in a 49 minutes clash. Sharath will take on defending champion Ma Long from China in the third round.
However, it was a disappointment for India in women’s singles as Manika Batra and Sutirtha Mukherjee were knocked out after losing their matches.
Manika Batra was no match 10th seed Sofia Polcanova of Austria in her third-round class. The Austrian won 11-8, 11-4, 11-2, 11-7 in 25 minutes.
Sutirtha Mukherjee was outclassed by Portugal’s Yu Fu 3-11, 3-11, 5-11, 5-11 India second round.
