U17 World Championships: Indian wrestlers bag 12 medals; freestyle team finishes 2nd overall

India finished the 2022 U17 World Wrestling Championship with a total of 12 medals including 6 gold medals which concluded in Rome on Sunday. The Indian freestyle team secured the second spot in the competition.

On the final day of the event, Nikhil Yadav Pilanagoila clinched bronze in men’s 60kg freestyle. He defeated Azerbaijan Agha Gasimov 5-2 in the bronze medal bout.

The Indian freestyle wrestlers bagged 6 medals including a gold, which was won by Sachin Mor. With 126 points, they secured the 2nd spot in the team standings. The USA took 4 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze medals and won the team championship with 190 points. Azerbaijan (122 points), Iran (117 points) and Kazakhstan (110 points) made up the top 5.

Overall, India finished with 12 medals including 6 gold, 1 silver and 5 bronze medals. The women’s team won 5 gold medals and were 2nd in team standings with 149 points, behind powerhouse Japan (180 points). The Greco-Roman wrestlers won 3 medals — 1 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze. Suraj Vashisht became the first Indian Greco-Roman wrestler to clinch a gold medal at any World Championships after 30 years. The last time, an Indian won a gold medal at the World Championships in Greco-Roman wrestling was in 1992 through Pappu Yadav, who claimed top honours at the U20 level. Pappu was also the first and last U17 World Champion in 1990.
