World Athletics U20 C’ships: Rupal clinches bronze with personal best effort

Rupal Chaudhary bagged bronze in the women’s 400m final at the ongoing World Athletic U20 Championships in Cali, United States. The Indian produced her personal best effort to take the third spot and win her second medal of the championship. Thus, she also became the first Indian athlete to win more than one medal in the same edition of World Athletics Championships at any level.

17-year-old Rupal clocked a personal best timing of 51.85 in the final to give India a second medal at the ongoing World Athletics U20 Championships. Yemi Mary John of Great Britain won gold with a timing of 51.50 while Damaris Mutunga of Kenya took silver clocking 51.71.

Earlier in the competition, Rupal had helped India clinch silver in the mixed 4*400m relay. The quartet of Rupal Chaudhary, Kapil, Priya Mohan and Bharath Sridhar set up a new Asian Junior record of 3:17.76 to take the silver medal, finishing 0.07s behind gold medal winners in the USA. Jamaica took bronze with a timing of 3:19.98. India upgraded the bronze it won last year in Nairobi where powerhouses the like USA, Jamaica, and Great Britain didn’t participate.

In other competitions, Selva P. Thirumaran qualified for the men’s triple jump final. He finished 3rd overall in the qualifying round with the best effort of 15.99m. Vivek Kumar qualified for the men’s javelin throw final with the best throw of 69.68m. He was 8th overall in the qualifying round.

Agasara Nandini set up a new U20 national record in women’s 100m hurdles. She clocked 13.58 to finish 3rd in heat 2 and qualified for the semifinals. Unnathi Aiyappa Bolland (14.28) finished 7th in heat 1 and failed to make it to the semifinals.
