World U20 C’ships: Freestyle grapplers finish with seven medals, decure third position

Indian freestyle wrestlers finished their campaign at the U20 World Championships with seven medals and a third-place team finish on Wednesday in Sofia, Bulgaria. On day 3 of the championships, Indian freestyle grapplers bagged a silver and two bronze medals.

India’s sole finalist Mahendra Gaikwad (125kg) lost to Amirreza Fardin Masoumi Valadi by technical superiority 2-13 and settled for silver. Gaikwad had defeated Uzbekistan’s Namoz Abdurashidov 6-0 and Turkey’s Adil Misirci 6-4 to enter the final.

Kumar Mohit (61kg) defeated Jeyhun Allahverdiyev of Azerbaijan 7-0 to clinch bronze. 2021 U17 world champion Sagar Jaglan outclassed Iliyas Yerbolatov of Kazakhstan by technical superiority 10-0 to win India’s second medal of the day.

India finished with seven medals and at the 3rd position with 112 points. Iran won the team championship with 159 points while the USA (132 points) came second. Indian freestyle grapplers had won 4 medals on day 2. Abhishek Dhaka (57kg), Sujeet (65kg), Mulayam Yadav (70kg) and Neeraj (97kg) won their respective bronze medal bouts to make a podium finish.
