East Bengal and ISL : Will they finally come together ?
In recent years, every off season in Indian Football has the same question doing the rounds among fans – “Will East Bengal and Mohun Bagan join the ISL ?”. The 2 Kolkata bigwigs have always been faced with this question ever since rivals Bengaluru FC made the shift to the franchise based league in 2017.
With Mohun Bagan having tied up with existing franchise ATK to join the ISL bandwagaon, the only question is regarding the Red&Golds’ participation in the cash rich league.
With the ISL now gaining the status of being India’s top division and the I League increasingly being cornered, the East Bengal faithful is unlikely to find the prospect of continuing to participate in the I League a tempting one, especially after their arch rivals also jumped the ship.
The biggest roadblock to the club’s participation in the FSDL run tournament is the yearly franchise fee that teams need to pay to the organisers. The club will part ways with existing investors Quess Corp on May 31st, 2020.
Names of numerous potential investors have been doing the rounds on social media but none have been officially confirmed by club authorities.
A stting of early signings in the transfer window have made fans hopeful of an eventual foray into the Indian Super League. This optimism has been further fuelled by top official Debabrata Sarkar’s statement to News18.
