India’s Archana Kamath produced a fighting performance before bowing out 1-3 to second seed & World No.15 Doo Hoi Kem in the women’s singles quarter-finals at the WTT Star Contender Doha at the Lusail Sports Arena in Qatar on Friday.
Facing world No. 132 Archana, the second seed Doo Hoi Kem of Hong Kong had to dig deep before registering a comeback win (9-11, 13-11, 11-8,11-6) over the Indian.
Seven Indian paddlers participated in the tournament and only Archana made it today 2. World no.132 Archana Kamath qualified for the quarter-finals after producing back to back major upset on Thursday. The 21-year-old stunned world no.39 Mo Zhang in the second round. Canadian Paddler was ousted in straight sets (11-8, 15-13, 11-7). In the round 16 match, the Indian paddler registered a spirited comeback win over Japan’s Miyu Nagasaki. Kamath upset World no.57 3-2 (11-13, 6-11, 11-8, 12-10, 11-8) to book a place in the quarter finals of WTT Star Contender Doha 2021.
Today, Archana had a brilliant start in the game. She won the opening game and put the pressure straight onto the Hong Kong paddler. Archana fought well in the second game but 24-year-old Doo Hoi Kem came up on top and restored parity. In the following two sets, the bronze medalist of the women’s team event at the Tokyo Olympics showed her class and ousted the Indian.
With Archana’s defeat, India’s challenge in WTT Star Contender Doha came to an end.
